I pack a lunch for my husband every day, and all I seem to come up with are sandwiches and thermoses of soup. Bleah. I need new lunch ideas. He works outdoors and does not have access to a kitchen, so it has to be ready to eat and not easily spoiled. He's a meat and potatoes kind of guy, though I keep a tight rein on those potatoes.

what's the weather like where he works? If it is hot in the summer like it is here, beans and weenies can be a fun change. Just pack 2 chopped frozen hot dogs and send a can of beans with a can opener. Instruct hime to leave the can of beans out in the heat to "cook" and at lunch time, add the hot dogs that will be thawed and cooked by then. My brother is a construction workder and this is a very popular meal for them...especially accompanied by some home made corn bread! If that doesn't trip your trigger, what about a roll up sandwich? Just put your toppings onto a soft tortilla and roll it up. It is quick, easy, and a nice change from two slices of bread! I assume you add sides such as fruit or veggie sticks and dessert, so I won't go there.

I carried one of those small gas grills so I could grill a hamberger or hot dog or what ever.

You could probably use the thermos to hold hot items other than soup--like spaghetti, or chili. Some items are good cold too--fried chicken and pizza for example. Personally when I don't have access to a kitchen I usually end up w/pb+j and some fruit as my lunch.

I make assorted fillings in pockets of sweet dough to use for snacks and lunches away from home. I fry hamburger meat, bacon, or ground turkey then add onions and shredded cabbage. Once cooked and seasoned I stir in 1/2 cup water, simmer for 1 minute and stir in about 1 cup instant mashed potato flakes. When coolish I place a good spoonful on dough squares and seal them up. For parties use filo dough. They freeze well and are thawed by lunchtime. You can come up with other fillings that are still tasty at room temperature.
