I'm not sure if I should post this here in, Healthy & Low Carb, or if this is more appropo for the Special Dietary Needs forum, so I'll do both and hope for the best. My spouse and I have quite smoking and have gained some weight. I'm using the South Beach Diet to help us lose that weight. Can anyone answer these questions? Must the daily menu's be used in order given, in other words days one through fourteen, in that order? Can you switch an entire day of food, say day four menu for day three menu? Can you switch part of the daily menu such as the dinner from day five used as the dinner on day seven? Because you gradually add back foods that are avoided in the first two weeks, I'm wondering if the order of foods in Phase One has an affect on Phase Two of the diet. Thanks in advance. B.

The menus do not have to be followed in the exact order. You can switch meals around form day to day. Personally, I don't use the menus because they are too involved. I like quick and easy. Besides, I would be broke if I ate their menus. I know they recommend the following plan for Phase 1: Breakfast: 2 oz protein (if still hungry you may increase slowly); 1/2 cup veggies or 6-8 oz tomato or veggie juice; no fruit or starch; 2 cups daily of milk or dairy; 1 tsp mayo, trans fat free margerine or oil (optional for breakfast) Lunch: 3 oz protein (again can be increased); 2 cups minumum of veggies (encouraged to include 1/3-1/2 cup beans; no fruit or starch; 1 T mayo, trans fat free margerine, oil or 2 T salad dressing (lite). Dinner: Pretty much the same as lunch. Snacks: Optional I did lose weight during phase 1 but then went on a cruise and undid everything, so now I'm back at the beginning. Good luck and hope I helped.

My husband I started the south beach way of life almost 2 years ago. I lost over 45 lbs and he lost over 50lbs. We did try a few of their meals but we really just followed their rules of what to eat & not eat and made our own meals & menus. We lost a lot in the first 2 weeks. We've cheated alot in the past 6months and are getting ready to do the first 2 weeks over. I was a pasta-holic!!! I only buy whole wheats, read all labels, and never go with out . If we crave it we get it but only in small portions and only on occasions. We send all unhealthy left over home with company!! Good Luck!! Stick with it, it really works!

I don't follow the menues either, but after a year of using the recepes and food lists to create my own as well as trying theirs, I have lost weight, but more importantly, feel a lot better. After a while you really stop craving most of the unfriendly foods (that's really what they are--foods that are not our friends even though they pretend to be) and can remake some of the ones you still crave. I agree that the menus are interchangeable. Just plan out your own meals by following their 'structure' and according to what you have on hand and you will do fine. SBD is one of the better programs out there IMO along with other low carb plans. Good luck! Celadon

I am on this diet too, and mostly follow the allowed and foods to avoid guidelines, versus the daily meal plans. This was my sister's suggestions because she has lost 30 lbs on the diet.
